Telavi, Eastern Georgia, is the best place for wine in the entire world. It is sold inside 2 litre Coca Cola bottles. The wine comes in at a competitive one euro per litre. It’s all homemade.
Telavi has the most gracious hospitality. It has free carrots, appetisers, apricot jam and Wi-Fi. The bed and breakfast has a wife who cooks all day and changes the sheets in the meantime. It has a man who sits around doing very little and tells her to keep busy. He offers one shot of cha cha (homemade spirits) before every meal. Two if your mate has rabies.
It has beautiful views of crisp crested wineries nestled in the foothills of the Caucasus, beautiful roads filled with linear herds of marshrutky frolicking freely between the lanes, and Eric Liddell’s Big Horse on the radio of your Pajero 4 wheel drive. The sun is fading in the west. Just out of reach, Russia sits beyond the mountains.
