Off-Season in Mallorca

Off-season Mallorca hits different. It’s Mallorca minus the noise. No beach clubs, no queues, no sunburned package tourists. Just empty trails, rugged coastlines, and the quiet optimism of chasing winter sun somewhere other than the Canaries or Dubai.

We stocked up early - LIDL essentials: tortilla, seafood, endless Spanish meats, and that same Bulgarian cider we always look for when travelling. Cala Mesquida was home base. It’s about as far from Palma airport as you can get, in the north of the island. Mostly German hikers, mostly quiet. From here, the island opens up slowly - sunset walks on empty beaches, lookout points followed by 3-hour hikes over headlands and coves, and long, slow afternoons that blur into evening.

One day, a storm rolls in, hard and fast. The next, we’re back in t-shirts. BBQ dinners - squid, tequila, and whatever meat survived the overcooking. Tapas in Cala Ratjada. One club open, maybe. Pollenca delivers charm and hills packed with cyclists chasing their own off-season rush.

Mallorca at the start of the year isn’t about doing much. It’s about finding space - and sun - just enough of both.
